Reedsport’s mat squad might have bit off slightly more than they could chew at the Reser’s Tournament of Champions.
The Braves scored 51.5 points, placing 15th at the 22-team, invite-only event last weekend in Hillsboro.
Sweeping the competition, 6A Roseburg wrestled to first place in three weight classes for 223.5 team points. Multi-state champion 2A Culver placed 20th with 31 points.
During a weekend dominated by large, tough teams, Justin Halstead and Jon Thurber kept the Braves afloat, each cleaning up consolation brackets in their divisions.
Halstead lost a 112-pound match to Hermiston’s Sid Britt, 4-2, before winning four matches in that consolation bracket. He lost the consolation final 3-0 to Tazz Tinner, of Newberg, taking fourth place overall.
Thurber (160) won 16-7 against Tualatin’s A.J. Peaslee. But in his second championship match, Thurber lost 5-3 to Joey Chandler of Newberg. Chandler went on to win the championship.
In his consolation bracket, Thurber won three matches before scoring 6-4 against Hermiston’s Ben Millard to take third overall.
Tim Spangle, Andrew Orr and Tyler Hoffman each pinned opponents for the Braves.
Reedsport wrestlers also competed in North Bend last Thursday. Results from that event were not available by press time.
