The Reedsport/Winchester Bay Chamber of Commerce recognized many community members Saturday night with awards for business or community service efforts.
Presenters kicked off the chamber’s annual banquet event with a round of introductions before awarding Steve Reese, Kathleen Miller and Joe Zelinski with 2009 Community Service awards.
Reese was recognized for his work as chairman of the Port of Umpqua’s board of commissioners and a member of the Lower Umpqua Economic Development Forum, among other accomplishments.
Zelinski is president of the Reedsport Braves Boosters Association that organizes local fundraisers and sports tournaments.
Miller was honored for her involvement with several local groups, including the Reedsport Rotary Club and the Coastal Arts and Business Alliance that organizes local art events and fundraisers.
The chamber’s Business Person of the Year award went to Kent and Sandy Abendroth. They purchased KDUN Radio in 2008 and are active in community and church groups, including Kent’s current position as vice president of the Rotary club.
Mark Bedard received the Oscar Anderson Volunteer of the Year award in recognition for his work in promoting the Reedsport-Winchester Bay area through the Memorial Day celebration and the annual Chainsaw Carving Championships. He also has served on several local government boards, is a former member of the Reedsport Volunteer Fire Department and currently serves on the Lower Umpqua Economic Development Forum and helps out with the United Fund.
Reedsport High School senior Tia Howell was given a Future First Citizen award with a $500 scholarship, while her classmate, Sandra Ashley-Large, was honored as the student representative.
The chamber also awarded several recipients its Above and Beyond the Call of Duty awards: Carleene Compton, for 40 years of participation in dozens of community groups; dentist Gerhard Goorhuis, for giving his time and expertise to a dental van program; and Paul Stallard, who helped with a variety of chamber events last year.
Following the award presentations, Chamber manager Robin Dollar and second vice president Nancie Hammond gave the group an update on their many new and innovative advertising activities over the past year.
Winchester Bay business owner and 2009 chamber president Greg Hoover then presented a new president’s gavel to Jeff Vander Kley, who will lead the chamber in 2010.
