Lakeside man arrested

Coos County Sheriff’s deputies arrested a Lakeside man Friday afternoon on charges of sodomy, sex abuse and sexual penetration.

According to a Coos County Sheriff’s Office press release, at approximately 5:20 p.m., deputies received a call from Bay Area Hospital reporting that a woman had been sexually assaulted.

A deputy came to the emergency room and met with the 34-year-old Coos Bay woman and, with the sexual assault nurse, examined her. After an interview, the deputy went to the Astro Gas Station in Coos Bay.

With assistance from Coos Bay Police officers, the deputy arrested Ricky D. Poepping, 49, on charges of first-degree sodomy, first-degree unlawful sexual penetration and first-degree sexual abuse. He was taken to the Coos County jail, where he is being lodged on $1.75 million bail.

The investigation is continuing. Burglary arrest

A Winchester Bay man was arrested Tuesday, following a burglary report to Reedsport Police.

According to a Reedsport Police Department press log, at about 10:01 p.m., officers went to the Pelican Market, 75298 Highway 101, Winchester Bay, to assist Douglas County Sheriff’s Office deputies on a call of a burglary in progress. Officers Dustin Anderson and Michael Pitcher were first on the scene.

Upon arrival, they saw a man fleeing the market. The officers followed the suspect on foot, eventually capturing him.

Officers then arrested Jarrett D. Willer, 21, on charges of first-degree burglary, second-degree burglary, and two counts of second-degree theft.

He was taken to the Reedsport jail, and was later taken to the Douglas County jail on May 1, where he remains on $15,000 bail. Beacon discarded

A report of a distress signal in the Reedsport area Wednesday proved to be little more than a discarded emergency beacon. According to a Douglas County Sheriff’s Office press release, at about 7:22 p.m., the Sheriff’s Office received a report of an emergency beacon in the Reedsport area.

Amateur Radio Emergency Service volunteers were dispatched to Reedsport and located the active beacon in a dumpster near Fred Wahl Marine Construction, 100 Port Dock Road.

Deputies learned it had been inadvertently thrown away while remodel work was being done on the vessel Melanie.

ATV injures man

A Vancouver, Wash., man was injured Friday in an all-terrain vehicle accident near the third beach parking lot in Winchester Bay.

According to the Douglas County Sheriff’s log, at about 3:20 p.m., Brian Steffy, 44, was riding over Razorback dune when his 2000 Yamaha Banshee nose dived.

Steffy’s face smashed into the handlebars on impact, cutting the right side of his face.

The Winchester Bay Quick Response Team bandaged Steffy’s face and he was taken to Lower Umpqua Hospital by personal vehicle, police said.

A hospital spokeswoman said Monday that Steffy was treated and released.

Road closure

Drivers planning to take state Highway 38 between Drain and Elkton will have to rework their travel plans Friday, when the road closes.

According to an Oregon Department of Transportation press release, the highway will be closed between those areas from 9 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. on Monday, May 12, to replace the bridge at the east end of the Elk Creek Tunnel.

Detours will be in place during the closure.

Motorists heading west from Interstate 5 to Reedsport are advised to take exit 136 Sutherlin and follow state Highway 138 to Elkton. Those traveling east from Reedsport to I-5 should turn off Highway 38 at Elkton and follow 138 to I-5, exit 136.

Local traffic will be allowed between Elkton and Tom Foley Road on the west side of Elk Creek Tunnel and between Drain and a weigh station at milepost 41 on the east side.

The bridge replacement is part of a project to replace five aging bridges on Highway 38 between Elkton and Drain. Built between 1929 and 1932, the bridges are being replaced to ensure safe travel on this route between the coast and I-5.
