| Reedsport will need to rally at district tourneys

After the first day of the district golf tournaments, the Reedsport boys and girls team have plenty of work to do if they’re going to make the state tournament.
The girls were third overall, trailing Sutherlin and North Bend at Bandon Crossings. Reedsport’s score of 483 was 16 shots behind Sutherlin and 10 behind North Bend.
The top two teams, and the top three individuals not on qualifying teams, make it to the state tournament.
Reedsport’s Heather Parker was second after the first day’s competition after shooting a 104. Kayla Powell of Sutherlin led the race for medalist honors after firing a 103. Casandra Woodward of Sutherlin is third with a 106.
“It was a tough day for everybody,” Reedsport coach Mary Ann Wells said. “The scores were just not good. It’s a tough golf course and they’ve only played it once. I suspect the scores will be better (Tuesday).”
Emily Lavigne was second for the Braves with a 118. Kathy Schriver shot a 127 and Dani Plagmann rounded out the Braves scoring with a 134.
“The girls are not all that discouraged,” Wells said. “They know they can all shoot 10 shots better.”
Reedsport’s boys are in fourth place after the first day’s action at Tokatee. The team is 22 shots out of second place, but Cody Savey shot an 84 to be in fifth place overall. Savey is second out of players not on the first two teams.
Case King of McKenzie shot par (72) to lead the race for medalist honors. RO Gamez of Oakridge is second (77) followed by Aleks Gabrio of Creswell (80) and Thomas Schrack of McKenzie (82).
Derek Shore shot the second best score for the Braves with a 96. Eli Garner was next with a 99, Duncan Law shot 100 and Brian Law was fifth with a 109.
“Duncan had his best round of the year (51-49) with an 11 on one hole on the backside,” coach Jim Wells said.
Wells said the weather and course conditions at Tokatee were perfect.
“Cody is in a good position to qualify for state,” Wells said. “We’re 22 strokes out of second place. That’s a lot of strokes to make up.”
Wells said he thought Savey would have to shoot an 80 or 81 to assure himself a spot at the state tournament.
Reedsport had a 379 total. McKenzie shot a 337, followed by Creswell’s 357 and Oakridge’s 364.
