Judith Anita Bedard

A memorial service was held for Judith Anita Bedard, 72, of Reedsport, at 7 p.m. on Sunday, April 27, at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church, 2160 Elm Ave., in Reedspor. A reception followed at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church.
Judy was born Feb. 17, 1936, in Deadwood, S.D., to Marcus and Louise (Heutzenroeder) Schmele. She died Thursday, April 24, 2008, in Reedsport.
She was raised in Lebanon and graduated from Lebanon High School in 1953. She married Donald L. Bedard on Nov. 23, 1954, in Lebanon. She was a homemaker and enjoyed RV traveling with her late husband, Don, throughout the U.S. and Mexico; sewing and knitting for her children and grandchildren; bird watching; surfing the Internet; and watching Judge Judy. She was well known by her family for knowing all the answers on Jeopardy and for being a champion Scrabble player. She was involved in the Lower Umpqua Hospital Auxiliary.
She is survived by her mother, Louise (Clinton) Stewart of Lebanon; her brother, Larry Schmele of Waldport; her brother, Carl Schmele of Clatskanie; her brother, Craig (Susan) Schmele of Corvallis; her sister, Nina (Ken) Selby of Lebanon; her daughter, Cindy Bedard of Culp Creek; her son, Mark (Karen) Bedard of Reedsport; her son, Kelly (Julie) Bedard of Houma, La., and Cadillac, Mich.; her son, Kerry Bedard of San Diego, Calif.; her son, Benjamin Bedard of Roseburg; her daughter, Mona (Cecil) Eberhart of San Diego; and her grandchildren, Katy (Garry) Lucas of Vancouver, Wash., Jake (Tina) Mensinger of Vancouver, Jessica Bedard of Reedsport, Nicklaus Bedard of Reedsport, Mariah Bedard of Culp Creek, Jana Bedard of Irvine, Calif., Brock Bedard of Houma, La., Micah Bedard of Houma, Aaron Eberhart of San Diego, and Amanda Eberhart of San Diego.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Donald Lee Bedard; and her father.
The family suggests memorial contributions to the Lower Umpqua Hospital, 600 Ranch Road, Reedsport, OR 97467.

Gary R. Essig
May 14, 1944 – April 23, 2008
A memorial service was held for Gary R. Essig, 63, of Reedsport.
Gary was born May 14, 1944, in Anoka, Minn., to Ervin and Dorothy (Glidden) Essig. He died April 23, 2008, in Reedsport.
He was raised in Oregon and Minnesota. He married Diane Keating on July 10, 1966, in Reedsport. They lived in Minneapolis, Minn., and Albany. They moved back to Reedsport in 1992. He was a retired construction millwright and a meat cutter.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golf, Harley-Davidson motorcycle riding and family. He was a member of the American Legion, the Moose Lodge, Kiwanis, and Harley Owners Group. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam conflict and was in the naval reserves for another six years.
He is survived by his wife, Diane Essig of Reedsport; his son, Gene Essig of Albany; his son, Wayne Essig of Reedsport; his brother and sister-in-law, Dennis and Mary Essig of Spring Valley, Minn.; his brother and sister-in-law, Nick and Kathy Essig of Stayton; his brother and sister-in-law, Lonnie and Karen Essig of Auburn, Calif.; his brother and sister-in-law, Glenn and Sue Essig of Winston; and his granddaughter, Samantha Essig of Albany
He was preceded in death by his parents and one niece, Kelly.

Elizabeth LaVerne Manners
Oct. 6, 1932 - April 13, 2008
A gathering to celebrate the life of Elizabeth LaVerne Manners, 75, of Reedsport will be at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 4, at Grace Fellowship, 480 Greenwood Ave., in Reedsport.
Elizabeth was born Oct. 6, 1932, in Antlers, Okla. She died April 13, 2008, in Reedsport.
She married Nerge Manners on June 9, 1951. They were married for 51 years.
Elizabeth moved to Reedsport in 2002 from Visalia, Calif. She was involved in her community and donated hundreds of handmade awards for 15 years for the teachers to give to the children. The PTA gave her several awards. In her 50s, she went back to school and earned her high school diploma.
When she moved to Reedsport she knew no one. She became involved in the church, Grace Fellowship, Bible study, singing, writing poetry, crafts, painting with acrylics and water color, sketching and her cockatiel, Charlie.
She made friends everywhere she went and she was helpful to everyone she knew.
Elizabeth is survived by her sister, Vola Ingram; daughter, Wilma Sage of Visalia; son, Richard Manners of Fresno, Calif.; daughter, Lana Roberts of Cottage Grove; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; her church family; and her extended care family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Nerge, on June 9, 1951; sister, Loretta; and son, Thomas.
Bert Bartow — 85, of Reedsport, died April 27, 2008, in Reedsport. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 3, at the United Presbyterian Church, 2360 Longwood Dr., in Reedsport. A reception will follow at the church. Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 3, at Reedsport Masonic Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Dunes Memorial Chapel, 271-2822.
