Braves are saving the best for last

The girls track and field team had its best meet of the season and seem to be turning in their best marks as the district meet gets closer.

Reedsport scored 130 points to finish second by just two points to Myrtle Point. Gold Beach was a distant third with 68 points and host Pacific was fourth (65).

“Caitlyn Riley had three PRs,” coach Steve Chase said. “In the 100, 200 and the long jump.”

The freshman also ran a leg on Reedsport’s winning 4x100 relay team.

Jessica Cooper also had a personal best in the javelin, breaking the 100-foot mark for the first time this season with a throw of 100 feet, 10 inches.

Tianna Butler and Kayla Monroe took home the bulk of the points in the heavy throws. The tandem finished first and second in the discus and second and third in the shot put.

The Braves also swept the jumps, with Becka Moore winning the long jump and Jordan James winning the triple jump.

The boys team dominated by scoring 182 points. Runnerup Gold Beach had just 127.5 and Myrtle Point was a distant third with 75.

“We took the top four spots in the 200 meters and the top four spots in the javelin,” Chase said. “Jason Fegles had a nice PR of 141-8 in the javelin.”

Brice Young finished second in the javelin and John Drozek was third. Both threw better than 134 feet.

In the 200, Keelan McDuffy won in 24.97, followed by Kole Freestone (25.22) and Taylor Ladd (25.95). Jason Fishel turned in another solid performance in the 100, finishing third in 11.75. He then won the long jump in 19-10.

Sophomore Ismael Osorio suffered a rare defeat in the shot put, finishing second to Gold Beach’s Logan Hockema. But Osorio came back to win the discus with a toss of 134-10.

The boys also picked up some points in the distance races with Alan Roy stopping the clock in 5:04.10 to finish second in the 1500 and John Thurber was third in the 3000.

Reedsport won both relays.

The track team was scheduled to go to Bandon for a meet on Tuesday and will host the Jack Blum Invitational on Friday. The meet starts at 4 p.m.
